Skype subscribers reach 40 million as the company moves into Xbox

Skype reports from its official company blog that the company has set a new record – 40 million users. This is a record for 40 million users that have used the service at the same time once, something that happens for the first time in its history. The previous figure recorded in March, was 35 million simultaneous users. In short, this growth bodes well for the future.

Moreover, and also from the official site of the firm, Skype has express wishes to use its service for humanitarian purposes. More precisely, the company has shown interest and desire to participate in initiatives to provide VoIP services when disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes, to mention some cases, and awareness of the importance of communication in such situations.

In addition, a number of rumors indicate that Skype will come to the PS Vita portable platform, software that broadens the benefits of this console developed by Sony. It is estimated that during the month of April there will be an announcement about it, but as in these cases is prudent to await the official information.

Other rumors say that Microsoft, the owners of Skype since 2011, claims that the VoIP phone service can be used from the web without the need for any local installation. The rumor has soared after Microsoft posted a job offer that asks the programmers specialized in HTML5 and JAVA to apply for the positions.

Microsoft looking for software engineers to integrate Skype into Xbox’s gaming platform

Microsoft has recently released two specific engineering job offers that specify knowledge in gaming platforms, video conferencing and VoIP communications, Skype.

After Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, the company has already announced its intention to use VoIP communications system technology in multiple services - in Windows Phone mobile platform, Windows 7 desktop systems and Windows 8, with the new interface Metro and corporate solutions to compete with industry giant, Cisco.

The job description say the company needs "motivated engineers with great skills to work and solve problems that customers may have as members of the Engineering team in London Xbox Skype."

Skype has 663 million registered users as of 2011. The VoIP network is operated by Microsoft, which has its Skype division headquarters in Luxembourg. Most of the development team and 44 percent of the overall employees of the division are located in the offices of Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.

Unlike most VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client–server system, and utilizes background processing on computers running Skype software; the original name proposed – Sky peer-to-peer – shows this.
