New native SDK for Android lets mobile developers easily add voice to a part of their apps. Twilio, a provider of communications in the cloud, is announcing the launch of Twilio Client for Android. The product, which is a software development kit (SDK) makes incredibly easy for mobile developers to integrate voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities to their applications in Android, it is important to any part of an app into a fully functional VoIP telephone. In addition to the recently announced iOS SDK, Android SDK release means Twilio Client is now available for 75% of global smartphones, according to recent data from Gartner.

"With the launch of Twilio Client for Android, we now support most of the smartphones globally," said Thomas Schiavone, Director of Product Management for Twilio. "With this many developers and our proven success in iOS, we know we'll see some incredible and innovative cross-platform app communication in the months to come."

Twilio Client for Android contains some basic features that make the application of building integrated communications significantly easier for developers, such as:

- Real-time presence - Developers can now build a list of friends to help with any app that let users know who is online. The Twilio platform notifies an app when a user is ready for voice chat so the calls are made only when the user is online.

- Apps in the background - The SDK can receive voice calls even if the app is not currently used. So users can play games or read the email and then switch their communications app only when the call comes in.

- Cross-platform Interoperability - Its client supports Android, iOS, and web browser so that apps can make calls between any platforms without any issues. The Twilio platform also allows bridging the VoIP calls to traditional phone calls. Developers can visit the home page to get started with no contracts or setup fees.

Twilio also announced recently that they are hosting their second annual TwilioCon on October 16, 17 and 18, 2012 in the city of San Francisco.
