62 percent of adults worldwide use social media, email still more popular

A new study from independent market research company, Ipsos, reveals that some 62 percent of online citizens around the world use the internet for social networking. Social media is most popular in Indonesia, where 83 percent engage, ahead of Argentina at 76 percent and Russia at 75 percent.

But while these findings are significant, social networking usage continues to lag behind email in every country, with a 85 percent of those polled favoring email messaging service as their top online activity.

Ipsos surveyed 24 countries from around the world, and discovered that the majority of those in each territory used the internet for sending and receiving emails, with the only exception being Saudi Arabia, where less than 46 percent use email. Hungary at 94 percent beat Sweden at 92 percent, Belgium at 91 percent and Indonesia at 91 percent are among the top emailing nations.

Of course, social media is still a newbie compared to the one of the first Internet services that is email, but it has quickly established itself as an Internet force in its own right in less than a decade.

About 61 percent of U.S. citizens now use social media, and even in countries where the pastime is less than the average a strong minority – 35 percent in Japan and 42 percent in Saudi Arabia – still engage.

In conclusion, Ipsos reported that Voice over IP (VOIP) is now being used by 14 percent of people across the globe, and is most popular in Russia, where more than 36 percent of citizens use the communication technology. This contrasts so much with the U.S., where just about 6 percent are using VOIP.
