Amherst Telephone Company was incorporated on July 3rd, 1903. C.J. Iverson was selected President. Capital to form the company was provided from 62 area residents pledging $25 each to buy a share of stock. In 1969, additional company investment and projects reduced 10 party to 8 party service throughout all exchange areas. The seventies brought an enlarged Amherst building and line service improvements to provide 1, 2, and 4 party service. From 1979 to 1981, an R.E.A. loan of 5.2 million dollars enabled over ninety percent of the lines to be buried with the benefit of less storm damage and more reliable service. A new Siemens digital switch was installed in 1995 to provide equal access long distance service required by new national FCC telecommunications policies and rules. On January 29th 1999, a fire caused extensive damage to our building. Through the conscientious efforts of our employees, we were able to keep most of our subscribers in service. We rebuilt and purchased a new replacement Siemens digital switch costing 2.5 million dollars most of which were provided by fire insurance payments. We continue to serve 250 square miles and over 5,500 access lines within 3 counties, Portage, Waupaca, and Marathon. We offer telephone, cable television, internet, and new iTV. We also partner with other companies related to our communications business. They include Alltel & Cellcom, wireless cellular services, Computer Systems LLC., a communications data processing firm, Wisconsin Independent Networks, a provider of fiber optic broadband transport services in Wisconsin, and Access Wisconsin, a provider of educational television transport services. The current Board of Directors include Carl F. Bohman, President, Charles Iverson Jr., Vice-President, Rita Danielson, Secretary/Treasurer, Tom Iverson, and Paul Berg. As a communications company and service provider in central Wisconsin, Amherst Telephone Company strives to educate consumers about the value our local companies provide, promote our personal customer service, and differentiate ourselves as a quality telecommunications provider.
