IP Telephony News Wrap-up for Aug, 30 2002

1. Comcast & China Netcom Select MTAs for VoCable Services
Comcast has named its eMTA suppliers for its VoIP over cable service slated to be launched in Philadelphia in Q’2 2002. The provider will deploy Motorola’s SBV4200, Arris’ Touchstone telephony modem, and Terayon’s TA 102. The devices are all DOCSIS 1.1 and PacketCable compliant.

Comcast will deploy Arris’ Cadant 4 CMTS as the headend for the network.

Comcast currently offers circuit switched cable telephony services to approximately 40,000 customers in Michigan and Virginia.

China Netcom has said that it will deploy InnoMedia’s 3328, a stand-alone, 4-voice port MTA as part of its VoCable network. The technology, interoperable with standard phones, supports Class features with call agents or softswitches, fax, 3-way calling, and auto-provisioning. It is compliant with PacketCable, RFC 2833, MGCP 1.0 and SIP 2.0.

China Netcom’s VoIP services will initially be offered to SMEs in 9 major cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The service will pass other major cities as the provider moves into subsequent network development phases.

The provider will use Photonic Bridges for systems integration and as a supplier for auto-provisioning servers and network mangement. Sonus will be providing its Insignius softswitch and GSX9000 Open Services Switch.
