1. 8×8 Launches Residential VoB Service
8×8 has launched Packet8, a residential VoB service that offers local, long distance, and international calling. For a $5.95 flat, monthly fee, subscribers can make unlimited calls to other Packet8 subscribers. The service also features voicemail, Caller ID, call forwarding, and web-based account management. There are no calling cards or special prefixes to dial.

Subscribers maintain a regular phone number, selecting between numerous area codes. Incoming calls are automatically routed to the subscriber’s current Internet access location.

Subscribers must install an adapter box that connects a regular telephone to an existing broadband or high-speed data connection.

3. Etisalat Deploys Zhone’s VoDSL Gear
Emirates Telecommunications (Etisalat) will deploy Zhone’s Single Line Multi-Service architecture to deliver VoDSL services. The implementation will use Zhone’s Broadband Access Node DSLAM with an integrated V 5.2 voice gateway.

5. GNP and Ericsson to Develop Signaling Platform
GNP and Ericsson are developing a cPCI signaling platform that combines GNP’s ComputerNode1U or ComputerNode2U multi-slot cPCI chassis and Ericsson’s Stack on a Card. The technology is targeted at developers of prepaid, messaging, softswitch, VoIP, and location based services for mobile telephone applications.

The chassis features a choice between 2 and 4 slot configuration, dual redundant (1+1) power, either AC or DC input voltage, and meets Telcordia GR-1089-Core Level 3 and Telcordia GR-63-Core Level 3 requirements for CO applications.

The Stack on a Card is an embedded hardware and software solution designed for SS7 connectivity in cPCI systems.

7. CTC to Deploy CommWorks’ Media Gateway & Softswitch
The CTC, also known as Itochu Techno-Science, will deploy CommWorks’ Total Control 1000 media gateway and softswitch, among 20 of the CTC’s service providers over the next 2 years. The technology will include a service creation platform and backend support for billing and user authentication.

The CTC is a VAR and systems integrator.

In other company news, CommWorks has said that Alcatel will resell its media gateways as part of the company’s Next Generation Network portfolio. Initially, the media gateways will be deployed to handle Internet dial-up traffic. However, Alcatel has supplied Turk Telecom with CommWorks’ media gateway for use within a VoIP network.

9. Internet Telephony Expo Returns to Miami in February
The Internet Telephony Conference and Expo will return to Miami from February 5-7, 2003 at the Hotel InterContinental. The event will feature presentations on wireless IP telephony and SIP. The expo will also include an international VoIP Summit for providers, manufacturers and resellsers, as well as IP PBX Shootout, an interactive panel discussion.

11. Fujitsu Introduces IP Centrex Phones
Fujitsu Network Communications has introduced 2 IP Centrex phones including the SRS-12i and SRS-24i. The phones feature remote firmware updates, 104 call log entries to track incoming and outgoing calls, SNTP for automatic time/date updates, and a 2-year warranty.
