1. Cisco Unveils IP Phone with Color Touch Screen
Cisco Systems has introduced 7970G, an IP phone with a backlit 12-bit color touch screen. The new phone will be marketed as a solution for retail outlets to run quick price and inventory lookups, for hotels to put room service and hospitality menus in guest rooms, and for contact centers to augment the amount of data they give agents by providing them with a second screen of customer information. Cisco will also target educators and government agencies.

The 7970G will begin shipping by the end of the year. General availability is expected in Q1 of next year. The phone will run $995.

Cisco has also announced the availability of XML and network based application support for two of its entry level IP phones including the 7905G and 7912G. Users will be able to access business information from the phones’ monochrome pixel based display.

The 7905G goes for $135. The 7912G is $165. The XML capabilities will be available with the upcoming release of CallManager near the end of this year at no additional cost.

3. Japanese Vendors Shipping IP Phones with Broadcom’s Chips
NEC Infrontia (IPterm30, IPterm85, and IPterm100), Hitachi Communication Technologies (IP Multi-Function Telephone Series), and Iwatsu Electric (IX-12IPKTD) are shipping enterprise IP phones that use Broadcom’s BCM1100 and BCM1101 IP phone engines.

The BCM1100 and BCM1101 are two port IP phone chips that include an integrated 10/100 Ethernet switch, a 150 MHz MIPS32 RISC processor, a dual MAC DSP, and three analog CODECs capable of supporting narrowband and wideband sampling.

5. NASDAQ to Delist Interactive Intelligence
NASDAQ has issued a Staff Determination Letter to Interactive Intelligence reporting that it would delist the company from NASDAQ for failing to comply with the minimum $50 million market value requirement by September 8. Interactive Intelligence will appeal the decision. A ruling is expected in the next 45 days. In the meantime, the stock will continue to be traded.

If Interactive Intelligence’s appeal is unsuccessful, the company plans to apply to transfer the listing of its common stock to the NASDAQ SmallCap Market. Approval of the transfer is not guaranteed.

7. Broadvox’s Solution to Include Kagoor’s Border Controllers
Broadvox, a provider of hosted PBX and IP Centrex services, will provide its customers with Kagoor Networks’ VoiceFlow remote NAT traversal solution. The technology allows VoIP traffic to traverse data firewalls with no configuration changes. Endpoints are allwed to reside behind NAT/firewalls, maintaining the security of a user’s network.
The VoiceFlow series of products support a wide range of border control applications including VoIP NAT, firewall, QoS assurance, monitoring and remote management and support for SIP, H.323, and MGCP.

9. Expanets & Calence Announce Cisco Installs
Expanets and Calence have announced plans to install Cisco’s VoIP solution among new customers. Expanets will deploy the technology for Interstate Hotels and Resorts, the largest independent hotel management company in the U.S., managing more than 400 hotels in 45 states and Canada. Calence will deploy Cisco’s IP phones for Perfect Commerce, a supplier of on demand SRM solutions, at company facilities in San Diego, Palo Alto, Las Vegas, and Lee’s Summit.

11. Westcon to Resell Avaya’s Technology to SMEs in Canada
Westcon will distribute the entire line of Avaya’s small to medium sized business solutions, including its VoIP solutions, throughout Canada. The Avaya systems to be carried include IP Office, Partner Advanced Communications System, and Merlin Magix Integrated Communications System. Westcon markets to over 3,500 resellers.

15. Comdial Awarded Patent for VoIP Diagnostics Technology
Comdial has been awarded patent 6,553,515 B1 for Diagnostic Supervision of Internet Connections, its systematic method for defining, collecting and reporting VoIP service statistics and providing a variety of response alternatives to maintain VoIP connection quality. The technology optimizes VoIP traffic flow based on QoS parameters.

One of the patent elements covers Comdial’s Real Time Response Manager, a system that supports the automatic re-routing of VoIP traffic and generates warnings of potential network problems. The patent also covers Report Manager, a solution for generating VoIP diagnostic reports that also has billing capabilities.

2. NetIQ Releases New Version of VoIP Assessment Software
NetIQ has released Vivinet Assessor 3.0, a new version of the company’s solution for determining how well VoIP will perform on a particular network.

New features include a quick check of voice quality by running a single set of simulated calls and receiving results in minutes; an analysis console for drilling down into detailed assessment data and generating customized charts to identify trends and anomolies in performing metrics; and the ability to add TCP background traffic to VoIP assessments to better assess the impact of various traffic loads on overall call quality. The new release provides greater access to the detailed metrics collected during an assessment and by providing greater flexibility to the user when defining assessments.

Short term licenses for Vivinet start at $1,295. Perpetual licenses are available for $12,000. A free trial version is available for download from NetIQ’s web site.

4. NetCodec Using GCT’s Chips in VoBluetooth Phone
NetCodec will be introducing an IP based voice over Bluetooth cordless phone that uses GCT’s chipset and associated software stack. The chipset includes embedded DSP capabilities as well as a radio transceiver.

Leopalace21, the largest apartment chain in Japan, will use NetCodec’s solution with its residential video on demand set top box. The company expects to install more than 40,000 voice over Bluetooth systems this year.

6. Galaxy Deploys Catch9’s IP Centrex Solution
Galaxy Telecom, a provider of managed VoIP services, has deployed Catch9 Communications’ SP1000 IP Centrex solution. The technology consists of an application server, a media server, and a core call routing server. The system supports SIP and MGCP.

8. Smarts Unveils Advanced Management Tools for CiscoWorks
Smarts has introduced InCharge, a suite of management tools that integrate with CiscoWorks IP Telephony Environment Monitor to monitor Cisco devices for a variety of fault conditions, conduct analysis, and pinpoint the root of problems in the network. InCharge includes a service assurance manager, a business impact manager, an IP availability manager, and adapters for SNMP and SYSLOG.

InCharge provides trouble ticket integration by interoperating with third party applications such as CRM and trouble ticket systems via API level integration or via File and SNMP Trap Notification adapters.

10. Atlas to Resell Net.Com’s Technology in the Ukraine
JSC Atlas, an IT systems integrator, will resell Net.Com’s communications platforms in the Ukraine and other CIS countries. Specifically, Atlas will peddle Net.Com’s Promina multiservice access platforms, Scream broadband service creation platforms and ShoutIP VoIP telephony platforms to government ministries, organizations and agencies as well as private sector enterprises and telecom companies.

12. Genesis and ElephantTalk Establish Co-Marketing Agreement
Genesis Systems International and ElephantTalk have entered into an agreement that calls for the two to co-market a VoIP solution that combines Genesis’ IP VPN solution and ElephantTalk’s IP interconnectivity services. Genesis is based in Hong Kong.

14. Viper Announces Intent to Merge with Mid Atlantic Intl
Viper Networks, an investment company and vendor of a USB phone, has announced that it is in serious merger negotiations with Mid Atlantic International, a VoIP and PSTN traffic carrier that operates a global network with operation centers in New York and Seattle.

16. Solidex to Resell NetCentrex’s Gear in Poland
Solidex will distribute, install, and support NetCentrex’s softswitch and media server solutions in Poland.

In other news, NetCentrex has announced that it has teamed with Highdeal to co-market a turnkey residential VoIP and IP based video on demand solution to telecom service providers that combines NetCentrex’s MyCall residential IP communications platform and Highdeal’s Transactive pricing simulation and price calculation system. The solution enables multiple IP services to be created and deployed and to be billed on a single invoice.

Highdeal is a spin off of France Telecom.
