Skype reports from its official company blog that the company has set a new record – 40 million users. This is a record for 40 million users that have used the service at the same time once, something that happens for the first time in its history. The previous figure recorded in March, was 35 million simultaneous users. In short, this growth bodes well for the future.
Moreover, and also from the official site of the firm, Skype has express wishes to use its service for humanitarian purposes. More precisely, the company has shown interest and desire to participate in initiatives to provide VoIP services when disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes, to mention some cases, and awareness of the importance of communication in such situations.
In addition, a number of rumors indicate that Skype will come to the PS Vita portable platform, software that broadens the benefits of this console developed by Sony. Microsoft has recently released two specific engineering job offers that specify knowledge in gaming platforms, video conferencing and VoIP communications, Skype.

The job description say the company needs "motivated engineers with great skills to work and solve problems that customers may have as members of the Engineering team in London Xbox Skype."
Skype has 663 million registered users as of 2011. The VoIP network is operated by Microsoft, which has its Skype division headquarters in Luxembourg. Most of the development team and 44 percent of the overall employees of the division are located in the offices of Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.
Unlike most VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client–server system, and utilizes background processing on computers running Skype software; the original name proposed – Sky peer-to-peer – shows this.
